What's New?
October 26, 2007
I have fixed some of the errors I have found on the web site. Still have additional work to do. I have been lucky enough
to add several notes to my collection, mostly colonials. I added an image of S-220, a $50 note from the first Hamburg
bank. It is unique as an issued note. There is one proof example known.
April 20, 2007
I have attended several shows and auctions in the past two months including the ANA National Money Show held in
Charlotte and the John J Ford, Jr Part 17 auction in Baltimore. I was able to purchase a small group of colonials at the
Ford sale. I was also lucky enough to purchase several great obsolete notes at the ANA show. I am rebuilding the
colonial web pages so that it will be easier to add additional colonials in the future. I now have 42 different South
Carolina colonial note varieties, which is no small feat. I am still missing a few fairly common December 23, 1776
colonials. It will be tough to get to 50 varieties as additional notes, beyond those 1776 notes, will be difficult to find and
they will be quite expensive.
February 16, 2007
Built nearly 3 of the 4 pages of Bank of the State of South Carolina large size obsoletes.
February 09, 2007
I have been doing some behind the scenes editing for the past few months and have been making updates to both the
SCNA web page and the SC Obsoletes page.
November 13, 2006
Updated SCNA event calender. Additional updates to follow due to SCNA elections and annual show held two weeks
ago.
September 04. 2006
Updated events page on SCNA web site in addition to other enhancements.
August 27, 2006
Added pictures to SCNA web site among other updates. More work in progress.
August 24, 2006
Added two 1778 South Carolina colonial notes.
August 20, 2006
Did an enormous amount of scanning and page building on the Bank of the State. I have the individual pages built for the
100+ notes. The front pages are done for the fractionals. Only the front pages for the large size are left. After that I
need to scan and create the pages for 135+ Scrip notes. I can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel!
August 19, 2006
I have done some general format clean up to the web pages and fixed some links. I added individual pages to the Charter
2044 nationals and colonials.
August 13, 2006
I have begun construction of a Colonial paper money section. This part of my collection is not as strong as the Banknotes
or Scrip, but I do have a few good pieces. This section needs to be cleaned up and individual pages for each note need
to be added.
August 11, 2006
I have made some small changes to the web site over the past few months and today I made some significant changes. I
added the National Bank Notes for the Bank of Charleston and I added several new notes and about two dozen
upgrades and proofs that I have purchased in the first half of 2006. I have been fortunate to be able to purchase almost
all of the notes I wanted out of the Schingoethe and Ford auctions. Hugh Shull also turned up an old South Carolina
Obsolete Banknote collection that had several great notes in it. I will be doing additional updates to the SCNA web site
shortly. Still have a lot of work to do on the Bank of the State pages. I also plan on adding my SC colonial notes and
Scrip at some point.
January 22, 2006
The March 18 coin show in Mooresville, N.C. has been cancelled. Updated SCNA event page to reflect this. Also
started building Bank of the State front page.
December 31, 2005
Finished the Union Bank. Bank of the State is next. I have 100+ notes on this bank so it will take a while.
December 30, 2005
Doing some additional tinkering. South Western Rail Road is complete. Completed State Bank. Working on Union
Bank. Only Union Bank and Bank of the State are left, but the Bank of the State is the biggest of all the banks by far.
December 28, 2005
Finally got some time to work on the web site. Made some changes to incorporate the SCNA web site. New front page
has links to SCNA web site or South Carolina Obsolete web site. Also working on South Western Railroad Bank pages.
September 23, 2005
I have been building a new web site for the South Carolina Numismatic Association (SCNA) and I have made it part of
this web site for the time being.
September 08, 2005
I am in the process of building pages for the last four banks. Currently working on the South Western Railroad Bank.
August 19, 2005
I discovered that my 12 year old daughter does a great job scanning notes. She has done most of the remaining bank
notes. We still have some of the Bank of the State of South Carolina fractionals to go. After that, on to the scrip! In the
mean time, I still need to build the pages for the last four banks.
July 14, 2005
Working over the past week to add the Bank of South Carolina. Only four more banks to go! Of course one of them is
the Bank of the State of South Carolina which issued 145 known varieties of notes. Many more than any of the other
banks. I have over 100 varieties so it will take some time to build those pages. I will probably add the Union Bank
before the Bank of the State of South Carolina and save it for last.
July 04, 2005
Added a few new notes and some upgrades form the Memphis show. When I last went to the show two years ago, I
bought one $25 note off the floor and a few at the auction. This year I bought 41 notes off the floor and a few at the
auction! It was the best Memphis ever for me. I updated the Bank of Camden page and added one upgrade. I added
two new notes to the Bank of Charleston. I upgraded several notes for the Bank of Hamburg and added one new one (S-
253). I missed this particular rare note twice in the past 8 years, but not this time! It is finally mine. I have additional
upgrades for other banks.
June 26, 2005
I realized the links on the Planters Bank of Fairfield and Planters and Mechanics Bank pages were "messed up". One of
the drawbacks to "cut and past". They should be fixed now.
June 08, 2005
Finished Peoples Bank, Planters Bank of Fairfield, and Planters and Mechanics Bank. Next up is Bank of South
Carolina. At this point, I have about one half of the Bank Notes on the web site. The Bank of the State of South
Carolina is over 100 notes by itself (there are 135 varieties in the Sheheen book). I have a lot of scanning ahead of me! I
also have two books of scrip, colonials, and Bank of Charleston nationals (Charter 2044) that I want to add at some
point.
June 07, 2005
Working on the Peoples Bank, Planters Bank of Fairfield, and Planters and Mechanics Bank. All of the notes are
scanned and I am building the pages.
May 29, 2005
Finished Bank of Newberry. I have made great progress on the web site over the past two weeks as I recover from my
hernia surgery. I have very little pain at this point, but I cannot move heavy objects for another month. This has kept me
from doing projects around the house.
May 28, 2005
Finished Bank of Hamburg (second charter period). Also added Merchants Bank of Cheraw! Next up is Bank of
Newberry.
May 27, 2005:
Just got back from Atlanta and Part 10 of the John J. Ford sale. I was able to buy the $7 Bank of Charleston, which was
an upgrade to the note I had, along with a couple of Revenue Band Scrip notes. Prices for many items in the auction
were reasonable and there were even some bargains. Of course, some items went for "stupid" prices. I corrected the
scan for S-68. I had the scan for S-67 (Bank of Charleston $10) in both the S-67 and S-68 page. I have added the
Bank of Hamburg (first charter period). Next up is the Bank of Hamburg (second charter period).
